The Hunger Games

All of the 7th grade is reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. They are learning about culture in the novel and connecting it to themselves as we all read it. We are also using the identity of the characters to help students write about their own identities in narratives. “May the odds be ever in your favor!”

El Sistema Orchestra

Honor Roll

Congratulations to our honor roll students! We are all very proud of them and the hard work they put in every day.

2013 3A Confluence League Player of the Year

Aurora West College Preparatory Academy junior Amber Corbett is proving that she's not your average basketball player. The Lady Spartans' captain was recently named the 2013 3A Confluence League Player of the Year.

"It's a great honor and shows that all of the hard work that I put in is paying off," Corbett said.

Corbett racked up some impressive stats in the 3A classification this season, including a number one ranking in scoring and three-point percentage. She also ranked in the top 25 in assists, blocks and free throws.

Aside from her talents on the basketball court, Corbett is making the grade in the classroom as well. Currently, she takes college classes at CCA. In fact, one of Corbett's most memorable moments during the season was a particular game where she only played three quarters. She had to leave for a scholarship interview and was pleased to find out that the Lady Spartans won the game.

"Having the team come in and tell me that we won ... it was definitely the highlight," Corbett said.

Corbett's success this season should come as no surprise, as she used the offseason to play for the Colorado Rush basketball team and attend the University of Colorado Basketball camp. She has also played for the Boys and Girls Club and helped run the open gym for the Lady Spartans at Aurora West.

Hats off to you, Amber!

AWCPA’s Lady Spartan Basketball Team

AWCPA’s Lady Spartan Basketball Team, coached by Redonia Clark, was featured on the Prep Sports Show on Channel 9 News.  The Lady Spartans won their game against Southern Colorado Early College by a score of 64-20.  Eleventh grader Amber Corbett led the team with 37 points, including six “3 Point Shots”.  Being a student-athlete at AWCPA is a very rewarding experience.  Student-athletes must maintain their grades, be outstanding role models for their school and classmates, and display good sportsmanship at all times.

Aurora West Boys Soccer Team Notches First Playoff Victory

There’s a first time for everything.
In sports, many athletes remember the first time they made the varsity team, sank a game-winning shot, kicked a game-winning goal or won a championship. Well, for the Aurora West College Preparatory Academy boys soccer team, two important firsts happened recently.

Aurora West defeated Salida High School 2-1 in the first round of the Class 3A soccer playoffs, earning their first playoff win in their first-ever playoff appearance. Staff members and nearly four dozen spirit bus riders cheered on the Spartans and coach Ryan Adams.

Remarkably, the team makeup consists of only underclassmen and juniors. The school’s first senior class will graduate in 2014.

The team defeated Salida in the first round of the 3A competition, but lost 5-3 to Frontier Academy in the second round.  The team proved that they can compete with any team in the state and we are looking forward to an outstanding season next year.

Congratulations on this outstanding accomplishment!

The Clean Team

Ninth graders at Aurora West College Preparatory Academy experienced the rewards of community service as part of their High School Orientation this summer. Students collected trash from around the AWCPA vicinity in an effort to clean up their neighborhood and learn the importance of volunteering. During their Orientation, students learned a variety of skills that will help them be successful in high school. The class of 2016 is ready to serve and ready to learn as they begin their high school careers at AWCPA.
